Memories and visceral connection

Ben Gorham, the thirty year old tattooed and sloe eyed founder of Byredo Parfums is bringing his line of fine niche fragrances stateside. To create Pulp, he engaged the young perfumer Jerome Epinnette (who is best known for Cannabis Rose by Fresh and his work for Jovoy Paris). While fine ingredients are important to Gorham, the language of perfumerie is vital to the brand. Memories and visceral connection define the Byredo brand.
Pulp is hard to define; is it a fruity scent or a floral? For me, it’s a new species of flower with pungent green leaves and a heady fruity flower. The fragrance on my skin opens very green and with a dense sap, but the drumbeat of the middle notes emerge and the power of the fig, red apple and tiare accord comprise the ‘pulp’, with base notes of praline and cedar wood grounding the fragrance.
The ‘heart’ touched my heart --- the elemental darkness and light, wet
and humid, fruit and flower.

A person and new company I admire...

Byredo is a new fragrance brand from Stockholm, Sweden, that will launch five scents this summer. Byredo (from 'by redolence') fragrances are all inspired by the memories of founder, Ben Gorham.
The five fragances can all be worn by men or women and are all Eau de Parfums:
Chembur is named for the neighbourhood in which Gorham's mother was born and raised on the outskirts of Mumbai. Gorham visited Chembur several times in his childhood and the fragrance is inspired by his memories. Notes include bergamot, lemon, elemi, ginger, Temple Incense, nutmeg, labdanum, amber and musk.
Green contains notes of orange petitgrain, sage, jasmine, rose, honeysuckle, violet, tonka, almond and musk. The scent was inspired by Gorham's memories of his father's cologne from the late seventies.
Gypsy Water is inspired by Romany culture and is made up of bergamot, lemon, pepper, juniper berries, incense, pine, orris, amber, vanilla and sandalwood
Pulp is designed to capture the scent of flesh from the fruit of an exotic fruit bowl - notes include bergamot, blackcurrant, cardamom, fig, red apple, tiare, cedarwood, praline, peach flower.
The final fragrance in the range is
Rose Noir, which is based on a 'dirtied up' Damascena Rose notes. Other notes include grapefruit, freesia and musk
Byredo is available at Cow Stockholm; Les Senteurs London (from July); Barney's New York (August) and Colette Paris (August).
Basenotes will feature a profile on Byredo Parfums and founder Ben Gorham next week.
